Sandy Toes Journaling

For years my family would travel to the lovely beaches of North Carolina for our summer vacation. We would all cram into our rented 1200 sq ft. beach house on Topsail Beach just steps from the waves. I loved it. It was my escape from work, life, household chores. The minute we crossed the state line into NC, I could feel my stress melt away. Ahh!!! How I longed for the peace and serenity. And of course, my journal was tucked away in my beach bag.

Journaling while lounging on the beach is one of my favorite writing spots. I will admit, it’s not always easy to write with sand blowing around, but I just don’t care. If the beach was too windy or just plain ole too hot, I would sit for hours on the house deck and pour my thoughts and ideas into the journal.

My guess is that most people who journal have a favorite or preferred place to write. I’ve heard of people journaling on buses, in coffee shops, in their bedrooms, or on a park bench. One great thing about journal writing is there’s no need to have any special place or materials to make it happen.

Of course, you can write about anything that comes to mind while soaking in the sun. For me, I find the setting perfect for creative ideas as well as self-reflection. I’m able to clear my head of the “stuff” cluttering my mind and start fresh. Ideas seem to flow without hesitation. Could it be the water? Flow? Does the water inspire growth and ideas? Am I connecting with God in the midst of His creation?

Although not always my favorite past time, taking a look at my life and where I’ve been and where I’m going seems to also pop up while beaching it. What is God’s plan for the next phase of my life? The salty air seems to give way to self-reflection and life planning.

So, where do you journal? Do you have a place or space that inspires you to put pen to paper?
